Recently we caught up with Rodolfo Marques in preparation for his fight with Alex Volkanovski at AFC 8.
Rodolfo, you are coming off a hard fought unanimous decision victory at AFC 7 – how did you rate your performance in the fight?
How I lost to Robert Lisita in AFC 7 I chose to fight a safe fight and a secure victory. Many may not have liked my performance but MMA is this – boxing, wrestling , jiu jitsu and I opted for the easier way.
A lot of your fights seem to go the distance where you basically break your opponents down – is this a strategy of yours?
Not exactly! I have several fights in Brazil where I only used boxing and muay thai. I come from jiu jitsu; here in Australia has almost no black belts or fighters with a good level of jiu jitsu, so why I would not use my jiu jitsu if it is the weak point of almost everyone else.
Team Nova Uniao Aus and Extreme MMA are both very strong BJJ gyms – would you say this is your greatest strength as an MMA fighter?
I have jiu jitsu as a very strong point in my game, but also I play in all areas. I think I am a lot complete, I have good base in wrestling, good boxing and BJJ black belt.
Next you will fight Alex Volkanovski at AFC 8 – how do you think the fight will go against Alex?
I will not expect anything from him, I think I’m better than him in all areas and I will show it. He is aggressive, explosive and strong, not matter to me because I train to fight the best and I’ve fought better fighters than him. I do not want to disrespect him but that’s what I think.
No doubt you will hold a grappling advantage – do you plan to exploit this?
I will explore all areas is what I train every day. I’ll find a weakness in his game and I don’t give chance for escape!
What can fans expect to see from you at AFC 8?
You can expect to see the best featherweight in Australia. If they pay for a show it is a show that they will see. I’ll be the nightmare of my opponent in the ring.
